World famous Cable Beach is the stage for the Shinju Matsuri Sunset Long Table. It offers the rare experience of barefoot formal dining on pristine white sand just metres from 130 million-year-old dinosaur tracks. In its third year, the event is shaping up as the country’s most unique regional dining event. Shinju Matsuri President Chris Maher, announced today that the festival has secured Darren Robertson, of Three Blue Ducks fame and more recently as guest judge on My Kitchen Rules as the head chef.
“This year’s event promises to delight and surprise the 450 people lucky enough secure their tickets before the event’s likely early sell out”, Maher said.
UK born Darren Robertson moved to Australia in 2001 to work under Tetsuya Wakuin and remained there for eight years. In his time at Tetsuya’s, Darren worked for three years as Sous Chef under Martin Benn, and 3 years as Head Chef. Tetsuya’s sustained three chefs hats, was voted the 5th best restaurant in the world in 2007, best restaurant in Australasia in 2009 and awarded Restaurant of the Year in 2008 in the Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide.
“I am so excited to be involved in the 2017 Shinju Matsuri Sunset Long Table Dinner. Broome has been on my bucket list since I came to Australia and I am super excited to be working with the Shinju Matsuri team on this fantastic event”, Robertson said.
Chris Maher believes that Darren Robertson is the perfect fit for the 2017 Shinju Matsuri Sunset Long Table Dinner because of his experience with the Table Sessions, a guerrilla dining organization he started that ran pop-up dinners in warehouses, parks, beaches, gardens, rooftops, galleries and theatres. These dinners won the accolade of Best Event 2011 by Australian Gourmet Pages. Darren has the right mix of culinary skills, management and creativity to be able to transform an already magical location into something unique and extraordinary.
“We want Darren to bring his guerrilla dining experiences to the event, especially around the use of open fire on large beach BBQs. We want people to leave with unforgettable memories of Broome, Cable Beach and the Sunset Long Table”, Maher said. The Sunset Long Table delighted 200 diners in its inaugural year in 2015 with tickets selling out within just weeks of launching. 2016 saw the event double its numbers to offer an unforgettable dining experience to 400 people with tickets again selling out. This year, the organisers are focusing on creating the country’s most unique regional dining experience for 450 people. Chef Darren Robertson will have the back drop of the sun slowly sinking into the Indian Ocean as he creates his magic on Broome’s iconic Cable Beach. “I plan on bringing a new twist to the Sunset Long Table Dinner menu and surprise and delight the guests with some fantastic local ingredients” Robertson said.
Sunset Long Table tickets available online from June 7 at www.shinjumatsuri.com.au It’s not just the Sunset Long Table that’s set to impress visitors to Broome this year. This year will see the launch of the inaugural Pearl Harvest Party, a new event that will incorporate the pearling industry by providing the pearl producers and retailers with the opportunity to showcase their harvest. The Pearl Harvest Party will see Dampier Terrace closed to traffic and transformed to bring a party atmosphere to the streets with food stalls, music and entertainment for the whole family. Chinatown will come alive with the hustle and bustle of Broome’s pearling heyday rekindled.
Other festival highlights include; the Floating Lantern Festival on Cable Beach at sunset. “Jetty to Jetty” a multi-media production of Broome’s cultural history presented across 3 nights on the shores of Roebuck Bay. “A View to Asia” an exhibition of three-dimensional sculptural works interpreting Broome’s cultural history overlooking the stunning views of the Indian Ocean, Cable Beach reserve.
